I have used this process of creating art since I was a teenager. After learning to read Tarot intuitively, I realized that my own artwork has become an oracle deck. Each piece has specific significance and symbolism for me. This kind of artwork continues to teach me for years after its creation.
How to practice Intuitive Art
Begin with no preconceived images or symbols. There may be an idea or emotion, but the image creates itself (or is created by Spirit) while the ego steps aside. It is easy to tell when the ego is getting pushy…things don’t go smoothly and a feeling of frustration arises. This process is a meditation, with immediate feedback. As soon as you feel frustration, judgement or anxiety about the artwork, stop and breathe.
When the ego steps aside, the feeling is that of watching something grow or watching a dance. There may be feeling of great excitement, sitting in front of an empty canvass or paper. ' Yay! It's play time!'
In times of depression, fear or anger, there may be a feeling of desperation. I have felt this way, praying for a release: 'maybe THIS will make me feel better.' Trusting the process and giving our selves time for this inner work is ALWAYS healing. Even if no insight comes to the conscious mind for months or years, the healing process has begun. There will be at least some relief as the weight of emotion is released.
As with most forms of meditation, choose a space and time that is conducive to inner work. This may mean a quiet space, being outdoors, or using relaxing music. Or it may take the form of violent release. Working with trusted guardian(s) is recommended. There is no space for judgment in the process.
